Tsujiri – Richmond
Tsujiri Richmond – The highly anticipated Matcha dessert finally opened their doors on Valentine’s day. I had the privilege to attend their grand opening so I got to avoid the line up and really experience the decor and the food that was being prepared for the general public later that day. I got a chance to taste their cold brew matcha tea, their mochi desserts and sample a few other sweets. I had bought 3 cakes to try. On the recommendation of a friend I had brought the Opera Cake, the double fromage and the yuzu cake. The Opera cake was exceptionally light and delicious. The fragrance of the Matcha shown very well in this cake and the compliment of the red bean layer help create a balance of sweetness and texture. The red bean had some red beans still intact and it wasn’t sticky nor fell apart from the matcha. That was one of my favorites. The yuzu is something I was looking forward to since I love anything citrus. The top yuzu jelly had a hint of tang but it didn’t overpower the taste of the mild sweetness of the cake. The cake itself was very moist and light so when you bite into it so it was a nice joy to eat. As for the double fromage – I hadn’t realize that it was matcha cheesecake. I was expecting something else. The taste was light and the matcha wasn’t very prominent here yet it was nice and smooth. I didn’t notice the tang that usually cheesecake. This cake didn’t have any of it at all. It was a nice treat but not impressive. Overall, I think it’s great and I prefer this place over Nana since I appreciate more mellow flavours than over the top sweetness. However, I’m aware the reviews for Tsujiri are very negative due to the long wait times, the lack of making enough inventory and the confusion in customer. This is most negative drawback to them. There are comments how Nana is better overall…and I think if you eliminate the factor of services..and just focus on the product – you should be able to tell the quality found in Tsujiri is exceptionally better than Nana. You can be the judge of it but that’s where my opinion lies. Anyone else want to share their thoughts?
