OEB Breakfast Co – Burnaby
OEB Breakfast – I’ve never heard of OEB Breakfast before. I went to their newest location in Brentwood Burnaby for a team lunch. I was surprised how popular and busy it was! Once we were seated, I noticed immediately they had some very creative marketing; where they name their dishes by playing on words of certain events or phrases. Their main focuses are breakfast dishes, yet if you dig further, they have some fancy and fresh ingredients that elevates a typical breakfast meal to a posh Instagram worthy eats. As this was my first time, I follow my colleagues recommendation and tried out the Tuna Crudo Breakfast Poutine since my first choice – Canadian Lobster & Shrimp Crepe was completely sold out! So what is the Tuna Crudo – it’s like a poke bowl but instead of rice underneath, it’s your choice of waffle fries or a bed of greens or a mix of both. Even though this dish indicates it’s a poutine, there is no real no connection to poutine at all. The dark gravy is substituted with brown butter hollandaise sauce and there is no cheese curds at all. The poached eggs with the Ahi Tuna with the avocado mixed together with the fries and arugula was very filling. The combination was very fun to eat since there was so many textures all in one bowl. I swear, my tastebuds have change or I’ve become very sensitive. But I found the Tuna lacking in flavour. I didn’t find any Tuna flavour, and the hollandaise sauce was a little overwhelming that it was all that I could taste since everything was so light I couldn’t taste much of the other ingredients flavour. However, the rest of the other dishes, like their Belgian waffle was super tasty. It was nice and aromatic crispy on the outside, and delicately soft on the inside. It was really nice done. Adding a bit of the icing sugar and some light maple syrup was perfect pairing for the dish. I enjoyed that dish more than the Tuna Crudo. However, I would definitely go back to try out the other dishes, since many of them sounds very delicious, and I don’t want to veto a place just yet based on just one dish.
