Brewhall
Brewhall – One of the most buzzing places to check out during your beer crawl evenings with friends/family. Brewhall opened their doors a few months ago, and took over the once Steeltoad brewery space in the popular Olympic Village Neighbourhood. Brewhall is own by Tap and Barrel. Like Tap and Barrel and their competitor – Craft, Brewhall focuses on making fun and tasty craft beer which serves right through the tap. What makes this establishment different from their parent company is the fact it’s casual and fun ambiance. There is an arcade area, benches all around and the food and beer are ordered right at the bar. There are no servers so you line up and order. You help yourself to a table that is free, and you wait for the food to arrive at your table with the number you’re holding. One of the neat concepts of the place is that you can bring your own cutlery, games, other food and drinks you like. There is no restrictions – apparently this concept is quite popular down in California. As for food – I was sadly disappointed. The pizza tasted more like a focaccia bread than pizza. The dough was so think. There was more dough than toppings. Clearly the cheese was lightly sprinkled since it it was so thin and the salami tasted more like pepperoni. The description sound better than how it actual tasted. I think I would have been happier with Dominos or Pizza Hut for half the price. I will merit the idea that some bartenders will take the time to explain each beer and give you a taste but as the queue gets longer, some will focus mainly to reduce wait time. They will not offer suggestions or provide sample of beer to try before deciding. Ordered the sticky beer chicken ends up being more of a sweet tangy chicken bites that were less than a handful. Taste wise – it reminded me of tao chicken with shredded garnishes to make it look pretty. Let’s say I wasn’t impressed with the sharable for this one. Lastly the build your own bowl. This was something that caught my eye since it’s customizable. I had ordered Mexican style and black rice with ahi tuna. Adding any protein is an additional cost. So you’re paying for $10+ worth of rice and garnish before that. Portion wise – it was generous. I was surprised at the amount. The overall taste wasn’t bad nor was it spectacular – but what do you expect from bar food? Overall the taste was just bland. I think if you added more of a chipotle sauce it would complement it very well. The Ahi Tuna wasn’t bad but I felt like it didn’t fit right with the mexican bowl. You would think if they give you an option of those protein choices with those base then they should have some sort of idea to provide some way to cook it in a way to complement each other. I felt like I was eating two separate dishes. Overall, Brewhall an option for those who want to come and chill, who enjoys the loud atmosphere and some small eats to help the beer to go down. I rather head over next door to Craft and be comfortable, less noisy and better tasting food. *PS. – Since being in Germany – I have been spoiled. I prefer German beer hands down over the craft beer here…..sorry…..
