Pho 99 – Coquitlam
Pho 99 – Coquitlam – I needed a quick place to have lunch while I was doing real estate course which was next door. I’m usually not a big fan of Pho chain stores such as Pho Hoa since they have been pretty disappointing in quality and service from the number of times I’ve been. However, I was told that this particular Pho business’s level of quality isn’t bad so I decided to give it a shot. I’m a passionate fan of Vietnamese cuisine, so I usually gravitate to less typical dishes from the general public. I decided to go for the Bun Bo Hue. It’s one of my favourite soup flavours that combine tangy and spicy with a beautiful full body pork/beef taste that has been simmered for long hours. I’m a big fan of lemongrass so this dish hits the spot for me. As for this particular one at Pho 99 – the presentation is definitely lacking, and I was hoping for more garnishes on top. For ingredients – there was more mixed meat i.e. beef balls, fish balls or vietnamese ham. There was hardly any beef brisket in the dish. As for taste, it wasn’t bad at all. It had more of a beefy umami flavour than the spicy and lemongrass taste that I was hoping to have for this dish. For price – it was reasonable – $10.50 CDN. Not too bad for what’s it worth. However, would I go back for this dish again – probably not. I would say – it’s not a bad place to grab a quick bite to eat but I have no urge to go back and try out their other dishes. It makes me think I can do better at home or I would rather go elsewhere and pay a little more for a more authentic taste of Bun Bo Hue.
