CakeYa
CakeYa – I wanted to try to find something different that wasn’t a typical Asian bakery for a friend’s birthday cake. I stumbled upon CakeYa which is a local Japanese bakery that specialize in cake rolls and mochi. I was hoping to pick up a cake from there but unfortunately due to time constraints, I couldn’t get one ordered ahead of time. However, I thought their roll cake would do the trick, along with their unique pudding flavours. I decided to purchase their strawberry shortcake roll. Honestly, there is something about the simplicity of strawberry roll that Japan specialize is very unique to them. I have visited Japan a couple of times, and the strawberry desserts are usually my go to when I crave something sweet there. The balance of fresh strawberries, the compote, the fresh cream makes an amazing balance with the soft, light and slight sweetness of the cake itself. I was looking forward to see how CakeYa’s strawberry roll fairs to the ones I’ve tried in Japan. CakeYa’s roll was just as I had expected, it was very similar to the one in Japan, the only difference is the strawberries. Strawberries here aren’t as naturally sweet which requires some sweetener to help bring out the flavour a bit. However, overall the cake itself was very nice. It’s a great dessert that goes well with tea or a nice light snack! Highly give this gem a try if you want a nice light and sweet dessert.
